===============================================================
CRITIC is copyright (c) 1989 by James Wygant, Portland, Oregon.
Version 2.1 - Feb., 1990
===============================================================
CRITIC is a shareware text analysis program. To become a registered user
of this program, send $10 to:
James Wygant
1130 SW Morrison, #220
Portland, OR 97205
In return, you will receive a printed 21-page manual and a 5-1/4 inch disk
with a version of CRITIC that displays in a window and restores the screen
when done (for IBMs and compatibles only). This shareware version of CRITIC
may be copied and distributed for personal use without charge. This does not
apply to the window version. Neither version may be used by a school or in
connection with classroom instruction, without the written consent of James
Wygant. Such unauthorized use would constitute a copyright violation.
=========================================================================
To run CRITIC enter the following at a DOS prompt:
CR [path\text file name] [path\output file name]
Use of input and output file names on the command line is optional. You
may enter neither, both, or just the name of the input file. If you enter
only an input file name, the output file will automatically be given the
same name, except with a .CRT extension. CRITIC will never overwrite an
existing file without your permission. If you do not enter either input or
output file names, you will be prompted for them.
CRITIC is a text analysis program. It scans a disk file containing text and
writes a report to another disk file. The report includes an analysis of
word and sentence lengths, an index of readability, a review of adverb and
and passive verb use, and warnings against possible grammatical errors.
This program produces accurate results from plain ASCII text (the kind that
can be read with the DOS TYPE command) and from WordStar (v.4 or earlier).
It will NOT not give accurate results with WordStar 2000, WordPerfect, or
other word processor files that use non-ASCII characters. To make an ASCII
file from your word processor file, see instructions in your word processor
manual under "ASCII" or "file conversion" or "converting".
In figuring readability and lengths of sentences or words, CRITIC regards
anything that looks like a word as a word. For accurate results, remove
non-text data (such as print or format commands, page or paragraph headings,
etc.) from the ASCII copy of your file before using CRITIC.
